NBA Draft Grades

Here is my list of each teams drafts from best to worst...

1. Memphis

#8 - Rudy Gay
#24 - Kyle Lowry
#45 - Alexander Johnson
Via Trade - Stromile Swift

It is hard to argue with the draft Memphis had. They managed to swindle the player with the most star potential in the draft for a guy that was a role player for them. They made a solid value pick taking Lowry at #24. He will be their PG of the future. Alexander Johnson was a first round talent, so getting him for peanuts was another steal. I am no fan of Stromile Swift, but he is decent and since Memphis probably would have done the trade without him in it he can’t hurt any. Jerry West still has it.

2. Portland

#2 - LaMarcus Aldridge
#6 - Brandon Roy
#27 - Sergio Rodriguez
#30 - Joel Freeland

Despite what Stephen A. Smith seems to think, I love what Portland did. They went from a directionless bad team to a bad team with a plan. They nabbed 2 of the 6 best players in the draft. Got possibly the steal of the draft in Rodriguez at #27 and Freeland is a very talented guy who can be left in Europe. Most importantly and no one else seems to want to say this, Portland has set themselves up as the early leaders in the Greg Oden sweepstakes.

3. New Orleans

#12 - Hilton Armstrong
#15 - Cedric Simmons
#43 - Marcus Vinicius

Value was the name of the game here. While every other team was getting creative, New Orleans just took the best player available at every spot. Armstrong and Simmons will be solid NBA players and Marquinhos in the 2nd round was an absolute steal. This is a team on the rise.

4. LA Clippers

#34 - Paul Davis
#52 - Guillermo Diaz

The Clippers got more value out of the #34 and #52 than the Knicks got out of their two 1st rounders. Davis and Diaz are both guys who will likely make the Clips and contribute some. This is as good as you can do in the 2nd round. Thank god the Knicks stink, because at the rate they are going, I won’t be making fun of the Clippers for a good long while.

5. Utah

#14 - Ronnie Brewer
#46 - Dee Brown
#47 - Paul Milsap

I admit it, I love Ronnie Brewer. The fact that he fell to #14 is bafoonery to me. If he can get his jumper more consistent he could be a top 5 player from this draft. I’m not a big fan of Dee Brown’s NBA chances, but if he can play in the NBA this is the perfect situation with his old running mate. Milsap is a solid banger and rebounded who should make their roster.

6. New Jersey

#22 - Marcus Williams
#23 - Josh Boone
#54 - Hassan Adams

Love the Williams pick, dislike the Boone pick. Marcus Williams should never have fallen past 13 and every team that passed on him who needed a PG are going to feel like Atlanta did watching Chris Paul last year. Boone is a stiff in training, but NJ does need bigs and their options were limited. I’d have taken Alexander Johnson, but Boone isn’t an awful pick since he won‘t be asked to score. Hassan Adams gives NJ another athlete, as if they needed one.

7. Seattle

#10 - Saer Sene
#40 - Denham Brown
#53 - Yotam Halperin

Seattle seems to have polarized people. Considering they didn’t want to pay a player lottery money, taking a flyer on a 7 footer with big upside who can be left in Europe is a smart move. The red flag here is that this is the 3rd straight year Seattle has drafted a project big man in the 1st round. In the 2nd round is where Seattle really excelled though. Denham Brown is a 1st round talent in my opinion and Halperin is another nice prospect who can be left in Europe to develop.

8. Cleveland

#25 - Shannon Brown
#42 - Daniel Gibson
#55 - Ejke Ugboaja

Who would dislike a draft in which you land Ejke Ugboaja? Not I. Shannon Brown and Daniel Gibson are the right kind of guards to put around LeBron James. Both are good athletes and shooters who play better when playing off the ball. Good thing cause the ball belongs to LeBron.

9. Minnesota

#7 - Randy Foye
#36 - Craig Smith
#57 - Loukas Mavrokefalidis

Why Minnesota didn’t just take Foye at #6 I do not really know, but all is well that ends well I guess. Minnesota got a guy who can come in and play right away to put along side KG who desperately wants to win now. Craig Smith is a solid 2nd round pick and he will be a good NBA backup big. The Greek guy who’s name I refuse to type again is said to be a decent Euro prospect, better than a handful of Euros who went ahead of him.

10. Charlotte

#3 - Adam Morrison
#50 - Ryan Hollins

The stache lands in Charlotte. Charlotte needed a go to scorer and a box office draw…mission accomplished. Hollins was an underachiever at UCLA but his size and skill set is intriguing this late.

11. Toronto

#1 - Andrea Bargnani
#35 - PJ Tucker

Toronto may have been happier with the #3 pick than the #1, odd how that works. They wanted Bargnani all along but he seemed like a stretch with the 1st pick in the draft. They tried to move down but no one was biting so Toronto decided to stay at #1 and just get their guy there. Bargs is as good a #1 pick as anyone in this even draft and he should help bring the up tempo Euroball style to Toronto that has made Phoenix so successful. PJ Tucker is another risk/reward pick as he was a very good college player who is a bit of a tweener with no jump shot. In 5 years this may be the best team draft of the night…or it may be the worst.

12. LA Lakers
#25 - Jordan Farmar
#58 - Danilo Pinnock
Via Trade - Maurice Evans

LA couldn’t ask for more than hometown product Jordan Farmar falling right in their laps. With the awful play of Smush Parker in the playoffs LA seems to need a new PG and the unselfish Farmar will fit nicely with Kobe and his band of merry misfits. Pinnock will be in the NBDL this time next season, but getting Mo Evans from Detroit was a steal.

13. Orlando

#11 - JJ Redick
#41 - James Augustine

The Magic didn’t have the sexiest draft of the night. It isn’t filled with tremendous upside and freak athleticism, but they did get 2 solid players at their 2 need positions. Redick will fill the Magic’s hole at SG and drastically improve their average outside shooting. Augustine could be the 4th big man the Magic have been looking for. No potential superstars here, but there is something to be said for adding 2 team players who are winners to a team already on the cusp of contention.

14. Chicago

#4 - Tyrus Thomas
#13 - Thabo Sefolosha

Solid but not outstanding draft for the Bulls (despite what ESPN seemed to think). Chicago takes the gamble on Tyrus Thomas, who has a bit too much bust potential for my liking this early. He goes into a good situation though and could become the best player in this draft. Thabo is the big tall SG that Ben Gordon is not. They will make a good combo or Thabo may just allow Chicago to move Gordon in a trade for KG or Ben Wallace.

15. Dallas

#28 - Maurice Ager

Dallas seems to have mastered the fine art of getting talent very late in the 1st round. Ager will play for them eventually and his scoring punch will be nice off the bench. Think of him as Stackhouse’s understudy.

16. Golden State

#9 - Patrick O’Bryant
#38 - Kosta Perovic

This has the potential to go down as a complete waste year if O’Bryant does not pan out. Perovic will never be an NBA player, so he was a wasted pick. I think O’Bryant becomes a player, but never underestimate Golden States ability to screw things up.

17. Houston

#32 - Steve Novak
#44 - Lior Eliyahu
Via Trade - Shane Battier

Houston has been the team getting hammered the hardest other than the Knicks for their draft. I think they probably overpaid for Battier, but I love his fit here playing off of Tmac and Yao. He is a good defender so Van Gundy will love him, and he will knock down the open jumpers Yao and Tmac supply for him. Novak is a pure gunner and he gives them a gunner off the bench. Eliyahu will be left in Europe to see if they can catch lightning in a bottle. Trading away Gay may go down as one of those “I can’t believe they traded him for that” moments in retrospect, but for now it is not as bad a move as most seem to think.

18. Philadelphia

#16 - Rodney Carney
#36 - Bobby Jones
#56 - Edin Bavcic

Philly did some good, but I hate that they passed on Marcus Williams. He was a steal to them at #16. Carney is a nice player but he is a bit of an overlap with Iguodala. Jones is another athletic wing who can defend. Marcus Williams and Jones would have rated out a whole lot higher, but for King this was one of his better showings.

19. Boston

#21 - Rajon Rondo
#49 - Leon Powe
Via Trade - Brian Grant
Via Trade - Theo Ratliff
Via Trade - Sebastian Telfair

I guess Boston is just trying to stockpile a buffet for Philly to pick from in order to get Iverson. If they do land AI then I guess this draft was a success, if not, it was just being busy for the sake of being busy. I hate the Telfair for the #7 trade, even if it did get them free of Lafrentz’s god awful contract. Rondo is nice, but Williams is better and was still on the board. Powe could be a steal in the 2nd round.

20. Indiana

#17 - Shawne Williams
#31 - James White

Fate realigned and Indy was in the exact same situation as last year…a top 10 talent falls in their lap and all they have to do is be the voice of reason and take him. They did last year with Granger and reaped the rewards, but this year they screwed it up. Marcus Williams could have been Indy’s starting PG this year, but instead they take a talented but raw SF who is similar to Danny Granger. James White in the 2nd is a gamble that I do not like. He is a tantalizing athlete but not a great player and a bit of a malcontent.

21. Atlanta

#5 - Shelden Williams
#33 - Solomon Jones

Williams will be a solid meat and potatoes player for Atlanta but #5 was simply too high for him. Atlanta picked a bad year to start drafting for need. Had they done that last year they would have Chris Paul. Rudy Gay or Brandon Roy should have gone here and you could easily move down some to nab Williams plus a proven NBA talent. Solomon Jones is a good athletic big but is super raw offensively.

22. Detroit

#51 - Chiekh Samb
#60 - Will Blalock

Blalock is a solid get with the last pick, but I am not a fan of trading Mo Evans for basically nothing. Detroit did not plan on making a splash with this and it is a good thing, because they didn’t.

23. Sacramento

#19 - Quincy Douby

I am not a Douby guy. I admit it. Maybe I am missing the boat and he will be a good NBA player but I see a poor man’s Salim Stoudamire. #19 was way too high for him. Sacto could gamble though as they have no pressing needs.

24. Washington

#18 - Oliksiy Pecherov
#48 - Vladamir Veermenko

Invasion of the European big men. Washington was in a tough spot when all the big men dried up before they picked. Pecherov is a nice player who can rebound and shoot from distance, but lacks inside game and toughness in the paint. Good player but not the immediate impact guy they needed. Vlad is a decent gamble in the 2nd round, he has NBA talent he just needs to put his game together in Europe.

25. Milwaukee

#39 - David Noel
#59 - Damir Markota

I do not want to love in a world where David Noel gets drafted and Mike Gansey does not. Ditto that for Darius Washington, Kevin Pittsnogle, and Louis Amundson. Noel is a good athlete but an average college basketball player. That last part does not bode well for his NBA future. If you live in Belgium, look for David Noel coming to a team near you soon. Markota will stay in Europe and see if he develops.

26. Phoenix

Future 1st Round Pick

Phoenix is either cheap or planning something as they moved both their 1st round picks for little more than cash and cap relief. Possibly trying to find a way to keep both Marion and Diaw.

27. New York

#20 - Renaldo Balkman
#29 - Mardy Collins

What can I say about the debacle that is the Knicks that has not already been said? Probably nothing but I will try anyways. Balkman is a good role guy who would have been a solid mid 2nd round pick. As the #20 pick though he is humongous reach. I feel about this pick like I felt about David Lee and Nate Robinson last year. You don’t take career backups this early. Mardy Collins may become a player, but NY needed a combo guard like my dog needs a unicycle. Long live Isiah for making the draft exciting.

Denver and San Antonio both traded their only pick. Miami had no picks. All 3 did better than the Knicks.

10 Most Likely Busts

1. Tyrus Thomas - This guy has bust written all over him. Thomas is a high risk/reward player who is super athletic. But he is too slight to play PF and seems like a bit of a SF/PF tweener. Tyrus has no offensive game to speak of and reminds many of another big first round bust in Stromile Swift.

2. Saer Sene - Another high risk/reward guy. Sene is everything you dream of in a big man from a size and athleticism standpoint. He is 7 foot tall with a 7'8'' wingspan and is already a great shot blocker. He has only been playing basketball for 3 years and he has very little experience and feel for the game along with no offensive game. He will be a project for whoever takes him, and projects rarely pan out in the NBA.

3. Josh Boone - Beware of the player better as a Freshman than a Junior. Boone is that player as he has regressed a ton in his 3 years at UConn. Boone has no offense what so ever and doesn't seem to have much drive or desire lately either. If he goes in the first round buyer beware.

4. James White - Another player who is a much better athlete than basketball player. White was considered firmly in the 2nd round until a couple of good workouts look to have shot him up into the late first. White is a chronic underachiever with attitude issues who was never an impact player at the college level. To give him a guaranteed multi-year contract is a bad idea.

5. Oleksiy Pecherov - Could well be another of the Euro big men too soft to play down low in the NBA. Pecherov has 1st round ability, but needs to bulk up and become tougher. He could go either way at this point.

6. JJ Redick - I have always been a big supporter of Redick's ability to play in the NBA. I think he is a better all around player, athlete, and defender than most give him credit for. That said, I do also recognize that his bust potential is higher than most. May become the most feared shooter in the NBA or he may become the next Trajan Langdon.

7. Shannon Brown - Undersized tweener who is super athletic. Is he AI 2.0 or Dejuan Wager 2.0? Only time will tell but for every AI or Arenas there are 10 undersized guards who do not pan out.

8. Patrick O'Bryant - O'Bryant has all the necessary things to become what every team needs, a solid 7 foot post player. He is though a bit of a project who will need time and good coaching to develop.

9. Quincy Douby - See #7, only take out "super athletic" and add "super shooter" in it's place.

10. Rajon Rondo - Never became the player at Kentucky that most expected and needs to get some sort of a jump shoot to be effective in the NBA. He also has not shown the ability to run a team at the PG position. Rondo is atantalizingg talent and one of the best defenders in this draft, but he is not without a good amount of question marks.

Witness

Tonight the Miami Heat won their first title in franchise history thanks in large part to Dwyane Wade's 36 point effort. At times in this series it seemed like Wade was playing one against five. Something else happened tonight though that the average fan may not have noticed.

Tonight...Dwyane Wade became the face of the NBA.

A few weeks ago I was planning on writing a post about how this season will be remembered as the year of LeBron. While that is still somewhat true, it is good that I never got around to writing that post because this year will no longer be remembered just as the year of LeBron, but instead will be remembered as the year of LeBron and Wade. Ever since Michael Jordan retired the NBA has been scrambling to find the next face of the league, and now suddenly they have two. Like Bird and Magic before them, LeBron and Wade should take the NBA to new heights as the sky is truly the limit for these two superstars barely old enough to drink. The NBA has hit the jackpot here and the icing on the cake is that both these guys are likeable, hardworkers who are unselfish and team oriented. In the T.O. era, this is a breath of fresh air.

This has been a watershed playoffs for the NBA from start to finish. TV numbers were up and stars were being made. With the Jordan era now a distant memory, the NBA has reloaded with possibly it's best group of young stars that may very well lead the NBA higher than Jordan could have imagined. With likeable young stars in the making like LeBron, Wade, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, and Dirk Nowitzki the NBA's future looks very bright indeed.

NBA Mock Draft (If I Ran The NBA)

This is what the draft would look like if I were picking for every team. It is assumed no trades happen. I will do another one of these right before the draft like I did last year.

1. Toronto - LaMarcus Aldridge (6'11'', PF, Texas, Soph.)
Best player in the draft can play center next to Bosh. Gay is an option but a Bosh and Aldridge front court is just too beautiful to pass up.

2. Chicago - Andrea Bargnani (6'11'', PF, Italy)
Chicago needs a scoring big man to play along side Chandler. Bargnani would make a great yin to Chandler’s yang. Chicago also has the money to get a guy like Drew Gooden to play until Bargs is ready to start.

3. Charlotte - Rudy Gay (6'8'', SF, UConn, Soph.)
Gay is the player with the highest talent ceiling in this draft and Charlotte is a team in need of a star player. Perfect match. Charlotte also needs a scoring wing and Gay’s defense and length make him a Bernie Bickerstaff kind of guy.

4. Portland - Adam Morrison (6'8'', SF, Gonzaga, Jr.)
Home town boy falls to a team that needs to stir up some fan support. Portland is a team with needs across the board but Morrison would bring a swagger that team desperately needs.

5. Atlanta - Marcus Williams (6’2’’, PG, UConn, Jr.)
Atlanta desperately needs a point guard and the best one in this draft falls in their lap. If I am their GM I would run my pick up to the commissioner. Williams isn’t Paul, but he is a good pass first PG who will set the table for the young studs.

6. Minnesota - Brandon Roy (6’5’’, SG, Washington, Sr.)
Minnesota seems to need a point guard and a center but really neither are an option here. They must take a guy who is ready now or KG will blow a gasket. Roy is the most ready to contribute player in this draft and even though he does not fill a need, he will be useful.

7. Boston - Tyrus Thomas (6’9’’, PF, LSU, Fresh.)
Boston has a prospect at every position, so here they get the BPA and also add an insurance policy incase Al Jefferson stays injury plagued. Even if he does not, Ty Thomas still brings a different dimension than Jefferson and you can never have too many bigs.

8. Houston - Shelden Williams (6'9'', PF, Duke, Sr.)
Williams is the perfect power forward to put next to Yao Ming. Williams is the banger that Houston desperately needs. Carney is a possibility as well.

9. Golden State - Patrick O’Bryant (7’0’’, C, Bradley, Soph.)
Golden State won’t be contending any time soon, so they can take a risk on a high reward true center. O’Bryant has the skill set required to become a top 5 NBA center…if he developes.

10. Seattle - Ronnie Brewer (6'7'', SG, Arkansas, Jr.)
Seattle is looking to cut down Ray Allen’s minutes, as he is not getting any younger. In Brewer they get that, as well as a guy who can be a defensive stopper off the bench who can also play PG and SF.

11. Orlando - Rodney Carney (6'6'', SF, Memphis, Sr.)
Orlando needs a SG who can defend and shoot three points. Carney gives them that as well as a big time athlete who could develop into a top 5 player from this draft.

12. New Orleans - Cedric Simmons (6’10’’, PF, NC State, Soph.)
Project big man with all the tools. With PJ Brown and David West, the Hornets can afford to take a guy who needs some time to develop. He is a good enough defender to play off the bench early on as well.

13. Philadelphia - Randy Foye (6’4’’, SG, Villanova, Sr.)
There is really no player here that is a perfect fit in Philly. Foye is however the BPA as well as a home town guy. His ability to play both guard positions is also a plus.

14. Utah - JJ Redick (6'4'', SG, Duke, Sr.)
Utah pretty much only needs a SG and preferably one who can shoot three points. Enter the best shooter in this draft. Redick is a particularly good fit because Deron Williams’ size and defensive ability will help counteract Redick’s lack of defense.

15. New Orleans - Tiago Splitter (6'11'', PF, Brazil)
Splitter will likely not stay in this draft due to his buyout issues, but if he stays in New Orleans should roll the dice on him here. Even if he can’t come over until next year.

16. Chicago - Mardy Collins (6'6'', SG, Temple, Sr.)
Chicago really has no glaring needs here, but a defensive SG would be a nice fit for when Gordon is simply too small or unable to defend guys like Kobe or Wade.

17. Indiana - Rajon Rondo (6'1'', PG, Kentucky, Soph.)
Tinsley is officially on the way out and Indy is in quasi rebuild mode. They could use a center here but there is not really one to take. Rondo is the pass first defensive point guard Indy really needs. He and Granger would be a nice young core.

18. Washington - Hilton Armstrong (6’11’’, PF, UConn, Sr.)
Perfect fit. This is a match made in heaven. Armstrong is the athletic young shot blocker Washington desperately needs.

19. Sacramento - Sergio Rodriguez (6'3'', PG, Spain)
Sacto is another team that has no glaring holes, so BPA is a good fit here. Sergio is flying up draft boards and he would be a good fit as a backup to Bibby or as a player they could trade who has some value.

20. New York - Shawne Williams (6’8’’, SF, Memphis, Fresh.)
New York is not going to be winnnig anything now, so they may as well take a young guy with some upside. They are pretty thin at Sf in general, so he meets that need as well.

21. Phoenix - Saer Sene (7’0’’, C, Senegal)
7 foot project goes to a team that can wait on him. Sene is a good athlete who can play in Phoenix’s up tempo style. He is extremely raw, but if he develops he and Amare could terrorize teams for years.

22. New Jersey - Jordan Farmar (6’2’’, PG, UCLA, Soph.)
Jason Kidd ain’t getting any younger and Farmar would be the perfect replacement. Fellow Pac10 PG with similar skill set will benefit greatly from studying under Kidd.

23. New Jersey - Alexander Johnson (6’9’’, PF, Florida State, Jr.)
The other think NJ needs is a PF who can rebound and block shots. There are not a ton of those in this draft, but Alexander Johnson may just be one. He clearly has the body and athleticism for it and is the best choice at #23.

24. Memphis - Kyle Lowry (6’0’’, PG, Villanova, Soph.)
Last of the true point guards with 1st round talent. Both Damon Stoudamire and Bobby Jackson are getting older and injury prone so PG makes a ton of sense here.

25. Cleveland - Quincy Douby (6’3’’, PG, Rutgers, Jr.)
Scoring PG in the mold of Arenas is just the kind of PG the Cavs need. The ball runs through LeBron, so a true point is not necessarily needed. Douby is a true scorer and deadeye jump shooter who will make people pay for doubling LeBron.

26. LA Lakers - Marcus Vinicius (6‘9‘’, SF, Brazil)
The Lakers hope one of the point guards fall here, but no such luck. A big man would also be an option, but really none of those fit here either. Vinicius is a multitalented player who can do a lot of things and is probably the BPA who is not a SG.

27. Phoenix - Richard Roby (6’5’’, SG, Colorado, Soph.)
Suns find their Barbosa replacement in Roby, a very athletic scorer who will excel in their system. He will take some time, but will be worth the wait.

28. Dallas - Rudy Fernandez (6'5'', SG, Spain)
Team with no true needs takes the BPA. He also gives them a security blanket in case Howard is pryed away in free agency after next year.

29. New York - Maurice Ager (6’5’’, SG, Michigan State, Sr.)
Another talented young guy to add to the Knicks young core. Now the Knicks just need to cut everyone who is not Nate Robinson, Ager, Shawne Williams, David Lee, and Frye.

30. Portland - Kevin Pittsnogle (6'11'', PF, West Virginia, Sr.)
Quality big who can shoot the three. He can play some center and Portland will need bodies if Pryzbilla bails in free agency. He and Morrison will bring winners mentality to a young team in search of direction.
